Two Masters Walked into a Kitchen…

Two Zen masters were baking in a kitchen.
One held up a whisk and asked,
“Do they have this where you are from?”
The other responded, “No.
Nor in India, for that matter.”
But he missed the purpose of the question.

Did the questioning master seek
To know if they had this whisk?
Did he seek to know if they had whisks at all?
Did he ask to learn if they had eggs and milk,
Or ask to learn if they had
Earth, water, fire, and air?

Did he seek to know if they had
Emptiness and dependence?
Did he ask to learn if they had dharma or zazen?
No, for the question was not a question at all.
It was a trap.
