how to trust

if you can trust the ones who lead you
you can take them at their word
but if they tell you lies
forget everything you’ve ever heard

if they tell you heaven
is buried in the dirt
then the earthworms
are going to get there first
if they tell you heaven
lives within the trees
no matter how you try
you won’t get there before the leaves

if they tell you heaven
is in vegetables and fruit
you’d better bow down to seeds
and follow in their suit

if they tell you heaven is the ocean,
you’d better make a wish
for you’ll never get there
unless you become a fish
if they tell you heaven
is somewhere “up above”
when you try to look for it
you’ll get shit on by a dove

if they tell you heaven
is in the things you wear
the fabric will consume you
till you’ve nothing left to bare

if they tell you heaven
is in a plastic surgeon’s needle
you’ve found a new place to pray
a different type of steeple
if they tell you heaven
is glowing on your screens
you’ll live behind a pane of glass
imprisoned on the edge of your seat

if they tell you heaven
is in the sky at night
the stars will beat you to it
for it is their birthright

but if they tell you heaven
is here and now, here and there
all about you and within you
in earth, water, fire, and air
in your mind, your body
to hear and taste
to touch, smell, and see
there’s not a moment to waste

then you can trust them
for what they say is true
heaven is wherever you go
if you step into heaven’s shoes
