take care

the heat of the sun waned in the sky
as it reached the pinnacle of its flight
it was time to leave and go home
before darkness came with the night

Onyx the Chick and Turquoise the Turtle
were sad their visit had come to an end
it was so lovely to see the White Prince
but they’d spent all the time they had to spend

don’t get too teary eyed, little Onyx
the Prince said with a comforting air
it was lovely to see you, old friend
said Turq, and then she added, take care

as Turq and Onyx strode off into the heat
the Prince’s palace shone like a hundred suns
its okay to cry, little Onyx, Turq encouraged
but we’ll be back again when the time comes

as they trotted on, a breeze rolled in
and Onyx felt a question growing inside
Turq, why do you say “take care,” he asked,
whenever we leave and say goodbye?

Turq let the question sit for a moment
then she said, dear Chick, whom I so love
I’ve raised you since I found your egg, all alone;
if everyone would take care,
everyone would be taken care of.
