grandfather’s song

there is a grandfather clock
ticking in the corner
always moving forward
never ticked off

if I let him bother me
I will feel anxious
put off by his frankness
like I’m running behind

if I fear what comes
when the clock stops
I’ll be a crock pot
slowly cooking

if I don’t sit still
and try to get ahead
I’ll be racing till I’m dead
I’ll forget to breathe and suffocate

so I remember to breathe
and I tick along
to the rhythm of the grandfather’s song
and sway to my inheritance

the gears were in motion
long before I arrived
but I’ll do more than survive
if I learn to savour my cadence
