fellow human being?
Is it harder to love
the human within?

Do you define yourself
by your worst traits
while giving others
the benefit
of the doubt?

Do you desire love
from those around you?
Is it a battle
to love yourself?

Do you define yourself
by what you hate
so you don’t open
your loves to attack?

Are we similar?
Do you alter your food
to alter your face
because you think
it will make you
love yourself?

in your head
discover
cruel and unusual ways
to cripple you?

Are you afraid to say
who you truly are
because you think
it might hurt
the ones you love?

Are we similar?
Did you once hold on
so tightly to a belief,
but let it wash away
once you realized
your wastefulness?

Are we similar?
Do you pretend
not to care so you
never have to find out
what it feels like to fail?

Are you addicted to lists –
Top 5, Top 10, Top 20;
are they your shortcut
to intelligence and identity?

Are we similar?
Do you believe that
all love is one love,
and love is
never a waste,
it’s always true?

Are we similar?
Do you know
what matters
most in your life?
Is it hard
to give it all
your attention?
