the ideal

I’m a white male
but it’s not who I’d choose to be intentionally
it’s not what comes naturally
I’m not a white man
but because of my biology
I’ve been dealt a white man’s hand

I have privileges and comforts
I spent summers with my toes in the sand and
never had to worry about food running out
nobody ever told me I couldn’t
any dream I had was mine if I took it
nobody questioned me

my intelligence, my intentions, my body
surely are clear and able
for I am the ideal
but we all know that’s bullshit –
white man, black man, woman, no man
can be perfect – no one is the ideal

we’re all asymmetrical
we try to deny our scalene synapses, but
we’ve all got some venom in our jagged teeth
but we can all fit together if we ignore our fake, dividing lines
your unevenness compliments my crookedness
there are nooks and crannies for everyone to fill

not one of us is more important
not one of us deserves more or less
because we’re all the same, even if we don’t act like it
we all come from one single source
trace far enough into the past, you’ll find our common ancestors
in blood and spirit, breath and fire, we are one

now it’s up to us
to chart a course of unity, equality, understanding
to pass on joy and love to our common descendants
the sun waits for us to rise
the depths and ocean breeze beckon us to set sail
will we voyage from our lonely sorrow back to our home soil?
