Candy Bars.

We worked for hours
without any interruption –
making progress with
home renos and construction –
but the smallest of tasks
can prove to cause disruption,
and a stupid little hinge
can cause an eruption
of rage that you’d been
keeping packed in storage.
You hardly lose your cool,
so this is strange and foreign,
the straw that broke your back
was a stupid little door hinge.
Come on, have a Snickers
or a Terry’s Chocolate Orange;
you’re not yourself
when you’re hungry,
you’re a machine like Florence
on a thin line between love and hate
like Martin Lawrence

(a Bad Boy kicking ass
and taking names later)
or a ragin’ James Earl Jones
(slayin’ rebels like Darth Vader).
Just don’t break anything,
we’re trying to fix this, remember?
We’ve accomplished so much
since we started in December,
but we could tear it all down
go scorched earth, leave it in embers
if we forget why we’re doing this,
if we lose our center.
So take a break, Kit-Kat
there’s no need
to lose your temper
Have a nice light snack,
a Coffee Crisp could stop the tremors,
but we should leave it at that
if you want to stay fit and slender.
How many candy bars
will it take you to surrender?

About the Author: I have a B.A. in Honours Religious Studies from the University of Waterloo and I love all major world religions – Eastern, Western, or in between. I’m genderqueer, and I’m comfortable with male, neutral, and female pronouns. I’m married to my dear wife Lynn, who is the love of my life, my best friend, and my muse. I think far too much, and often have too many ideas to know what to do with. And I am a doing being, just like you!
