don’t have to

you don’t have to travel far to see the fruits of injustice
you don’t have to travel at all
you just have to open your eyes

an upper class requires a middle class that doesn’t know its oppressed
such a cozy class but never satisfied;
sedated, opiated, but never at rest

a middle class requires a lower class that nobody gives a fuck about
a class so defeated all it can do
is desperately tread at the surface of our shit

you don’t have to travel far to see lives that have been stolen
you don’t have to travel at all
you just have to find the real between the lies

a society built by old immigrants
has no right to shut the door on new ones
a society built from indigenous corpses is our society

a society that enslaves people, rounds them up, and puts them in camps
is our society
you don’t have to travel far to see people benefiting
by selling other people’s skin

you don’t have to travel at all

About the Author: I have a B.A. in Honours Religious Studies from the University of Waterloo and I love all major world religions – Eastern, Western, or in between. I’m genderqueer, and I’m comfortable with male, neutral, and female pronouns. I’m married to my dear wife Lynn, who is the love of my life, my best friend, and my muse. I think far too much, and often have too many ideas to know what to do with. And I am a doing being, just like you!
